Iwakuma, M's down Phillies

Aug 20, 2014 - 3:04 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hisashi Iwakuma tossed eight shutout innings and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-2, in the middle test of a three-game set.

Iwakuma (12-6), who extended his scoreless streak to 17 2/3 innings, struck out 11, scattered just four hits and threw 74 of his 96 pitches for strikes for Seattle, which is 2-2 on the heels of a five-game winning streak.

"He was outstanding, he commanded all his pitches. He was in and out, up and down and did a tremendous job for us," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said of Iwakuma.

Kyle Seager smacked a solo homer and Mike Zunino hit a two-run single among his two hits in the triumph.

Fernando Rodney recorded the final out to notch his 36th save of the season. The Phillies had already plated two runs and put runners on first and second in the ninth, but Rodney struck out the tying run in Cody Asche to end the game.

A.J. Burnett (6-14) fanned nine, but surrendered five runs on six hits and four walks over 7 2/3 innings for the Phillies, who have dropped eight of their last 11 games.

"Battled right to the end," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Burnett.

The Mariners opened the scoring with two runs in the first, added another in the sixth and tacked on two more in the eighth.

Austin Jackson walked to lead off the first, stole second before Dustin Ackley walked and then both swiped a bag to put them into scoring position. Robinson Cano's RBI groundout brought home Jackson and after Seager struck out, Logan Morrison deposited a base hit into right-center to score Ackley.

Seager whacked a 3-0 pitch into the right field seats to begin the sixth.

Cano was hit by a pitch, stole second before Seager struck out and Logan Morrison coaxed a free pass in the eighth. Endy Chavez moved both runners up a base with a groundout and Zunino bounced a single through the hole on the left side to plate Cano and Morrison for a 5-0 M's advantage.

Chase Utley scored on a wild pitch and Dominic Brown hit an RBI double in the ninth to get the Phillies on the board.
