Gallardo goes after sixth straight road win in San Diego

The Brewers saw a five-game road win streak come to an end with a loss to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Tuesday night, but they send veteran Yovani Gallardo to the mound Wednesday night with a chance to secure the series win and maintain their margin in the National League's Central Division.

Milwaukee leads the division by 1 1/2 games, a gap that stayed intact when St. Louis lost in Pittsburgh.

Gallardo is unbeaten in his last seven road starts, winning five decisions, including the last three starts in a row. He's posted a 1.65 earned run average in those outings and is 3-1 in his career at Petco Park with a 3.16 ERA.

He was beaten at home, 8-3, by the Pirates in his last start on Friday.

In his last meeting with the Padres, on April 22 in Milwaukee, he allowed a single run in seven innings of a game the Brewers ultimately lost, 2-1, in 12 innings.

San Diego hands the ball to rookie Odrisamer Despaigne, who won two of his initial three starts with a sub-1.50 ERA, but has won just once in six subsequent outings with a 5.81 ERA.

He dropped a 5-1 decision at Arizona on Friday after allowing four runs in five innings.

"The way I pitched, if I feel like that 10 times I would win eight out of 10," Despaigne said.

In five games in San Diego, his ERA is below 2.50.

Milwaukee has lost seven of 12 decisions in 14 meetings with rookie pitchers this season.

On Tuesday, Abraham Almonte went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Padres past Milwaukee, 4-1.

Tyson Ross (12-12) allowed just one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings a day after watching Milwaukee put up 10 runs in the opener. The only run the Brewers mustered came on Scooter Gennett's ground-rule double in the fourth, as the NL Central leaders were limited to two hits the rest of the way.

Jimmy Nelson (2-5) was charged with all four runs, though only two were earned. He struck out seven over five innings.

The Brewers won two of three at home over the Padres from April 21-23.
