Ryan strong in debut as Tigers down ChiSox
Aug 31, 2014 - 5:42 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Ryan fired six scoreless innings in his major league debut and the Detroit Tigers held off the Chicago White Sox to post an 8-4 victory and a split of a day-night doubleheader. The White Sox took Saturday's first game by a 6-3 score behind a two-run homer by Adam Dunn and seven solid innings from Chris Sale.
Ryan (1-0), promoted from Triple-A Toledo to start the nightcap, scattered five hits and a pair of walks before having to sweat out his first big league win after Chicago scored four times in the eighth to nearly erase a 5-0 deficit.
"I was certainly happy," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said on Ryan. "He gave us a huge boost."
Dayan Viciedo's three-run homer off Joba Chamberlain brought the White Sox within one, but the Tigers struck three times in the ninth to nail down their sixth win in eight games.
Ian Kinsler paced Detroit offensively by going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Don Kelly and Ezequiel Carrera also recorded three hits, with Kelly adding an RBI on a double.
Chicago's Chris Bassitt (0-1) didn't fare as well in his big league introduction, surrendering five runs and walking four over 6 1/3 innings.
Bassitt, who had his contract selected from Double-A Birmingham to make the spot start, got through the first two innings without any problems before running into trouble in the third.
Carrera led off with a double and scored the game's first run on a single from Rajai Davis, who stole second in front of Kinsler's RBI single to left.
The Tigers increased their margin an inning later, loading the bases with one out on base hits by Kelly and Carrera and a walk to Davis. Kinsler then laced a two-run single up the middle for a 4-0 lead, which was quickly extended when Davis crossed the plate on Miguel Cabrera's groundout.
Chicago couldn't get a runner past second against Ryan, but its offense finally came alive in the eighth.
A pair of walks around an Alexei Ramirez double loaded the bases with none out and brought in Chamberlain to relieve Jim Johnson. The right-hander got Avisail Garcia to hit into a force play that scored a run, then served up Viciedo's blast into the seats in right center that suddenly pulled the White Sox within 5-4.
Maikel Cleto and Javy Guerra couldn't keep it a one-run game in the top of the ninth, however. Detroit again loaded the bases against the duo before J.D. Martinez lofted a sacrifice fly and Alex Avila plated Nick Castellanos with a single. Kelly capped the three-run inning with an RBI double to right.
Game Notes
Cabrera exited the game after his fourth-inning at-bat after appearing to aggravate a previous injury to his right ankle ... Bassitt earned his callup by going 3-1 with a 1.56 ERA in six starts for Birmingham ... Ryan had a 3-0 mark with a 1.64 ERA in five starts for Toledo ... Carrera stole two bases for Detroit, while Davis registered his 300th career steal in the third inning.
