Mets aim for series victory over Marlins
Sep 3, 2014 - 2:32 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets go for a second straight series win when they wrap up a three-game set against the Miami Marlins Wednesday. The Mets won two of three games versus the Philadelphia Phillies before splitting the first two meetings with Miami. They recorded an 8-6 win Tuesday night behind David Wright's three RBI and a combined seven hits from Juan Lagares and Travis d'Arnaud.
Wright also had three hits and Lagares added two RBI and three runs scored to his four-hit night (4-for-4) for the Mets, who rebounded from Monday's 9-6 loss in this series opener.
Mets starter Jon Niese earned the win despite allowing six runs on 10 hits over six innings of work.
"I had to battle," Niese said. "Fortunately we had some good offense tonight."
Jenrry Mejia nailed down his 22nd save in the ninth.
Jacob deGrom draws the start for the Mets and is 7-6 with a 2.94 earned run average. He has won six of his last seven decisions and allowed one unearned run and four hits in seven innings of a 4-1 win over the Phillies last Friday.
DeGrom, a right-hander, is 3-3 in 10 road starts and has won both of his starts against the Marlins.
The Mets will visit Cincinnati next for three games this weekend.
Miami lost for the seventh time in 10 tries last night, as Brad Penny was handed the loss for allowing four runs and seven hits in three innings.
"Giving up (four) runs early doesn't give you a very good chance to win," Penny said.
Christian Yelich went 3-for-5 and Giancarlo Stanton belted a two-run homer to reach 100 RBI (101) for the first time in his career. It's the most RBI in a season for the Marlins since Dan Uggla drove in 105 in 2010. The club record for RBI in a season is 121 by Preston Wilson in 2000.
The Marlins will host Atlanta next for three games this weekend.
