Teheran hopes for some support vs. Marlins

Sep 7, 2014 - 12:56 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - You couldn't blame Julio Teheran if he felt some shell- shock.

The Atlanta right-hander was on the wrong side of a no-hitter in his last start for the Braves and will be no doubt hoping for a little more help on Sunday when he faces Miami to close out a three-game series with the Marlins.

Teheran was nicked for five runs in 6 2/3 innings of a 7-0 loss to Philadelphia on Monday, when the Phillies got a combined gem from Cole Hamels and three relief pitchers.

In two previous starts, Teheran had allowed a single run in 12 1/3 innings.

He's been lights-out against the Marlins throughout his stint in the big leagues, though, winning all four decisions in seven starts while compiling a 2.31 earned run average. In three meetings this season, he's 1-0 with an even better 1.69 ERA.

At Miami in late May, he went 7 1/3 innings and allowed two runs in a 3-2 win.

The Braves have hit .204 as a team in their last seven games, but have managed 14 runs in their last three outings, including a 4-3 triumph in Saturday's middle game that came after a triple was reviewed and changed to a home run in the 10th inning.

"It was one of those things - weird," Atlanta's Evan Gattis said. "I saw it kick off and he didn't have the ball so I had to get to third. We want to carry it over. We have a quick turnaround but we want to feed off of this and get a win."

The Braves are in the thick of the postseason race, tied with Milwaukee for the second National League wild card position and a half-game up on Pittsburgh.

Miami is five games behind and will start Brad Hand in place of ace Henderson Alvarez, who's being hampered by a left oblique muscle strain.

Hand is winless in his last five starts -- losing four decisions -- and was tagged for four runs in 4 1/3 innings at Colorado on Aug. 24. He came in for Alvarez on Monday and gave up two runs in three innings in a game the Marlins won, 9-6, against the New York Mets.

He's not started against the Braves since 2011.

On Saturday, Gattis' towering blast off Bryan Morris (7-1) ricocheted off the facing of the home run sculpture and back onto the field of play.

Craig Kimbrel fired a 1-2-3 10th to notch his 43rd save of the year.

Gattis finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while starter Alex Wood allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over seven-plus innings for Atlanta, which had dropped four of its last six games coming in.
