Padres try to snap skid versus Rockies

Sep 7, 2014 - 2:05 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres will try to stop a four-game slide when they complete a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies Sunday at Coors Field.

The Padres dropped a 7-6 decision in 12 innings on Saturday, as Drew Stubbs provided the game-winning hit for Colorado.

Cory Spangenberg hit a two-run homer and Tommy Medica connected on a solo home run for the Padres. Jesse Hahn allowed the winning run to take the loss.

"Hard fought, both sides," said Padres manager Bud Black. "The Rockies played hard. They're playing hard, we're playing hard."

San Diego will also visit Los Angeles and Arizona on this road trip, and will send Tyson Ross to the mound Sunday. Ross is 13-12 with a 2.60 ERA and is 6-2 in his last eight decisions. Ross threw six innings of one-run ball in last Friday's 3-1 win over Arizona.

In six career meetings (4 starts) against Colorado, Ross is 0-3 with a 2.81 ERA.

Colorado has won three in a row and five of its last seven games, and received a big lift from Stubbs in the 12th inning to send the friendly faithful home in a happy mood.

DJ LeMahieu doubled to start the decisive inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Charlie Culberson. After Charlie Blackmon was issued an intentional walk, Stubbs punched a single to left and LeMahieu easily scored for the win.

Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer, while Michael McKenry hit a solo home run, drove in two and scored twice for the Rockies. Nick Masset worked a scoreless top of the 12th for the win.

"It would have been nice to put that one away a little sooner, but we found a way to get the W," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.

Franklin Morales will try to pitch the Rockies to a sweep of the Padres when he takes the mound Sunday afternoon. Morales is 5-7 with a 5.46 earned run average and hasn't tasted victory since July 8 versus the Padres when he tossed 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a 2-1 triumph.

Morales, who is 0-3 in his last nine outings, has a 2-2 mark and a 4.15 ERA in 16 career meetings (3 starts) with San Diego.

The Padres swept a three-game series against the Rockies from Aug. 11-13 at Petco Park.
