Fading Brewers aim to turn things around vs. Marlins

Sep 9, 2014 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - With only three wins in their last 18 games, the Milwaukee Brewers are playing themselves out of the postseason race.

Granted while they're still 1 1/2 games off the second wild card spot, the Brewers can't afford to lose more ground and will resume a four-game series Tuesday versus the Miami Marlins at Miller Park.

Milwaukee suffered its third straight loss in Monday's 6-4 decision, as Yovani Gallardo lasted 3 2/3 innings and yielded six runs, five of which were earned, and nine hits for the loss. He did manage to set the franchise record for strikeouts with 1,207.

The Brewers had a 2-1 lead for Gallardo after the first inning, but he later stared down a 6-2 hole by the third inning.

"We get the lead after giving up the run in the first inning. I just got to stay away from giving up runs. I've got to put up a zero and I wasn't able to do that," Gallardo said.

Jonathan Lucroy drove in two runs and both Carlos Gomez and Scooter Gennett had an RBI for the Brewers, who dropped six games behind St. Louis in the NL Central standings.

Milwaukee is 1-4 on an 11-game homestand and will also host Cincinnati.

Matt Garza's return from a stint on the disabled list didn't go as planned and he will try to redeem himself Tuesday against the Marlins. Garza was pounded for six runs and eight hits in just three innings of a 6-2 loss against the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday.

Garza, who made his first start since Aug. 3, is 7-8 with a 3.87 ERA and 5-4 in 12 home starts. The right-hander has faced the Marlins six times in his career and has a 3-2 mark with a 4.89 ERA.

The Marlins started a 10-game road trip on a positive note and stayed in contention for the playoffs.

Miami is 4 1/2 games out of wild card contention and used six innings of two- run ball from Brad Penny to win for the third time in four tries. Penny did walk three batters, but was bailed out by the offense.

"We just kept adding on and Brad did a great job shutting them down," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond.

Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Garrett Jones all homered. Stanton is second in the majors with 37 home runs and first with 105 RBI, the most for a Marlin since Dan Uggla had that many in 2010. The club record for RBI in a season is 121 by Preston Wilson in 2000.

Stanton also tied Uggla for the most home runs in team history (154).

Tom Koehler is 9-9 with a 3.74 earned run average and draws the start Tuesday for Miami. He has recorded three straight no-decisions and hurled seven innings of two-run ball with 10 K's and four walks in last Wednesday's 4-3 defeat at the hands of the New York Mets.

Koehler has allowed more than two runs only once in the past four starts. In 15 road starts this season, he is 3-5 with a 4.80 ERA. Koehler has faced Milwaukee twice (1 start) in his career and is 0-1 with a 14.14 ERA, allowing 11 runs and 12 hits across seven innings.

Milwaukee won two of three matchups with Miami from May 23-25 at Marlins Park and went 5-1 against the Marlins last season.
