Struggling Brewers resume set with Marlins

Sep 10, 2014 - 2:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Milwaukee Brewers hope to put an end to this late- season swoon when they resume a four-game series with the Miami Marlins Wednesday at Miller Park.

The Brewers dropped a 6-3 decision Tuesday and closer Francisco Rodriguez was to blame for giving up back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth inning. Casey McGehee hit a two-run shot and Marcell Ozuna followed with a solo home run to snap a 3-3 tie.

Milwaukee put two runners on base with one out in the bottom half, but Kris Davis lined out and Jason Rogers flied out to end the game.

"We'll just have to keep grinding it out," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We had a lot of opportunities. We're just not getting that big hit."

Aramis Ramirez had three hits and two RBI, while Scooter Gennett went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Jean Segura added two hits for Milwaukee, which has lost 16 of its last 19 games and four in a row at home. The Brewers are six games off the NL Central lead and sit even with Atlanta at 1 1/2 games behind the second wild card spot.

Milwaukee is only 1-5 on an 11-game homestand.

The Marlins have won three in a row and four of five games, and came up huge in the ninth inning last night.

After McGehee and Ozuna went deep to give Miami a comfortable lead, relief pitcher Steve Cishek worked the bottom of the ninth for his 34th save. Bryan Morris picked up the win with a scoreless eighth inning and Tom Koehler lasted five innings in the start, allowing a pair of runs and six hits.

"It looked like we were in trouble, and (Morris) did a great job of gathering himself and making pitches," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "That was the ballgame."

The Marlins have scored six runs in back-to-back games and are averaging that many in the past five. They are still alive in the wild card race and sit 3 1/2 games off the pace.

Miami, which still has Philadelphia and New York (Mets) to visit on this trip, will hand the ball to Jarred Cosart Wednesday. Cosart is 4-1 with a 1.99 earned run average in six starts with the Marlins and has won his last three trips to the mound, including Friday's 11-3 win over Atlanta in which the right-hander tossed 7 2/3 innings of three-run ball.

Cosart has lasted seven or more innings in three straight and four of his last five starts, and has never faced Milwaukee. In 13 road assignments with Houston and Miami this season, Cosart has compiled a 7-3 record to go along with a 3.51 ERA.

Milwaukee won two of three matchups with Miami from May 23-25 at Marlins Park and went 5-1 against the Marlins last season.
