Giants aim for sweep of Diamondbacks

Sep 11, 2014 - 2:20 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants look to stay in the postseason hunt and shoot for a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday at AT&T Park.

The Giants won Tuesday's opener, 5-1, and handed the Diamondbacks a 5-0 loss Wednesday night. Angel Pagan, Gregor Blanco, Travis Ishikawa and Matt Duffy all drove in runs and Ryan Vogelsong tossed 6 2/3 shutout inning for a no- decision. Jean Machi got the final out of the seventh for the win.

"Every time we came to the dugout, we said to each other, 'Let's help (Vogelsong) out,'" Blanco said.

San Francisco has won two straight and 11 of its last 14 games, and remains 2 1/2 games behind Los Angeles for the NL West lead. The Giants, who lead the wild card standings, will host the Dodgers for three games this weekend.

Jake Peavy has won two straight and four of his last five starts, and draws the start for the Giants Thursday. Peavy hasn't allowed an earned run in his previous two trips to the hill and tossed six strong innings in last Friday's 8-2 win at Detroit, charged with two unearned runs.

Peavy has made eight starts in a San Francisco uniform since coming over via trade with Boston and is 4-4 with a 2.36 ERA. Peavy has won two of his last three starts at AT&T Park and has plenty of experience with the D-backs from his days as a member of the San Diego Padres, as he sports a 14-12 mark with a 4.57 ERA in 30 career starts against them.

Arizona hopes to salvage this set by the bay and throw a wrench in San Francisco's playoff hopes.

The D-backs have lost five in a row and fell to 2-7 on a 10-game road trip with last night's loss, as Josh Collmenter's six scoreless innings went to waste and Oliver Perez absorbed the loss for giving up three runs in relief.

"Collmenter was phenomenal tonight," Giants outfielder Hunter Pence said. "Perez was pretty nasty, I hadn't faced him all year. I just tried to battle."

Jake Lamb had the only two hits for Arizona.

The Diamondbacks will start a six-game homestand this weekend with San Diego, followed by a visit from the Giants.

Arizona will send Randall Delgado to the mound Thursday and he made his first start since April 10 in last Thursday's 5-1 win at San Diego. Delgado threw five shutout innings of two-hit ball and did not walk a batter, and is 3-3 with a 5.40 earned run average in 41 games (3 starts).

Delgado has faced the Giants seven times (4 starts) in his career and the right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA.

San Francisco is 10-5 this season against Arizona.
