Padres eye back-to-back wins over Phils

Sep 16, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres will attempt to win consecutive games for the first time since the beginning of the month as they resume a four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.

San Diego has lost nine of 12 since winning a pair of games versus Arizona on Sept. 1-2, but one of those three wins came in last night's opener. Andrew Cashner hurled a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win.

Cashner stymied the Phillies throughout the evening, allowing singles in the fifth and eighth innings en route to his third career shutout.

Phillies starter Jerome Williams was up to the task in opposing Cashner, going 7 2/3 innings and yielding an unearned run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in a tough-luck loss.

"Right from the start you could tell that (Williams) was on, you could tell that (Cashner) was on," Padres manager Bud Black said. "You knew that this was going to be a low-scoring game."

The Padres plated on the only run of the game in the second inning.

Rene Rivera doubled to left to begin the frame and moved over to third on a groundout. Will Venable walked two batters later before Cashner reached on a fielding error by third baseman Cody Asche that allowed Rivera to cross home.

"It's tough," said Williams. "I just wanted to throw up zeros."

The Padres snapped a five-game losing streak against the Phillies, who have dropped four of their last six.

The Padres turn to Ian Kennedy Tuesday and he is 10-13 with a 3.77 earned run average. Kennedy has lost back-to-back starts and is 1-3 in his previous four decisions. In Wednesday's 4-0 loss at Dodger Stadium, Kennedy was tagged for 10 hits and three runs in six innings.

Kennedy has a 4-6 record in 15 home starts and is 2-2 with a 3.15 ERA in six career starts against the Phillies.

A.J. Burnett has struggled over the last few weeks and the Phillies hope he can right his own ship Tuesday. Burnett is only 2-8 with a 5.37 ERA in his last 11 starts dating back to July 18 and allowed four runs in six innings of a 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Burnett, who is only 8-16 with a 4.34 ERA in his first season with the Phillies, has a 4-9 record in 16 road starts and has faced San Diego 10 times (all starts) in his career, going 3-6 with a 4.05 ERA.

In 22 starts at night, Burnett is 6-10 with a 4.75 ERA.

The Phillies swept a three-game series versus the Padres in June and have still won seven of the last nine matchups between the clubs.
