Rockies, D-backs continue series at Coors Field
Sep 19, 2014 - 2:54 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies are no fans of the basement. The Rockies have spent more than two months at the bottom of the National League West standings, but they can officially exit the lowest floor on Friday night when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in game two of a four-game series at Coors Field.
Colorado won for the 10th time in 12 home games in Thursday's opener, which tied them with Arizona for the bottom spot in the division and the worst record in the NL. The Rockies haven't been out of last place since July 11.
They were down five runs in Thursday's game, but chipped their way back before Willin Rosario's two-run blast in the bottom of the ninth sealed a 7-6 win.
"It's been a tough year for the team in general. Right now we showed us and the world we can play baseball here," he said. "We come back, we fight, we do everything we have to, and for me that's finishing strong."
Rosario has a .394 batting average in 18 home meetings against Arizona.
"He's been through a challenging year but he's worked hard and he has a great attitude," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said.
Arizona starts rookie righty Chase Anderson on Friday with the hope that he'll continue a 2014 run that's seen him win all three starts against the Rockies while surrendering a total of three runs.
Last time he pitched at Coors Field, he went six innings and allowed one run in a 4-2 win on June 3.
He's pitched 148 1/3 innings between Double-A and the majors this season and anticipates this will be his final start before a season-ended shutdown.
"I have no problem with that. I'm just out there competing. I want to be out there as long as I can but I understand they're protecting me, and I'm just grateful that they're caring for me and my arm," Anderson said.
Colorado replies with Jordan Lyles, who's not beaten the Diamondbacks in five career starts, compiling an 0-2 record with a 7.30 earned run average.
He broke his left hand when attempting to tag a runner on a wild pitch against Arizona on June 4, an injury that shelved him for more than two months.
He won his first game after the injury on Aug. 6, but has gone seven starts since without a victory, including a 4-1 loss at St. Louis six days ago.
On Thursday, the Rockies were down, 6-1, but scored two runs in the sixth and eighth innings before Rosario capped off a 4-for-5 performance with his two- out, walk-off blast to deep left field off Addison Reed (1-7).
Michael Cuddyer belted a solo homer among his three hits and scored three runs for Colorado. LaTroy Hawkins (4-3), who is closing in on 1,000 career appearances, worked the top of the ninth.
Arizona is 9-7 against the Rockies this season.
