Mariners hope to rebound against Blue Jays
Sep 22, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Seattle Mariners continue their push toward an American League wild card berth on Monday when they open a four-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.Seattle's playoff chances took a hit this weekend, as it dropped two of three to the Houston Astros, losing the final two games, and sits just 1 1/2 games back of the Kansas City Royals for the final spot in the AL.
The Mariners, though, are 4-3 on their current 11-game homestand. Seattle will close the regular season with a three-game set against the AL West champion Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim next weekend.
Seattle fell to the Astros on Sunday, 8-3.
Michael Saunders hit a two-run shot and scored twice in the loss for the Mariners, while Hisashi Iwakuma (14-9) was tagged in defeat for six hits and four runs with three walks despite fanning eight over 4 1/3 frames.
Getting the call for the playoff hopeful M's on Monday will be rookie left- hander James Paxton, who has lost two of his last three starts, but is 6-3 on the year with a 2.06 ERA.
Paxton lost to the Angels on Wednesday, as he surrendered three runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He also struck out eight in the setback and has pitched to a 1.91 ERA over 15 big league starts.
Toronto, meanwhile, will hand the ball to lefty J.A. Happ, who has lost his last three starts. Happ lost to Baltimore on Wednesday and was reached for five runs (4 earned) and eight hits in six innings to fall to 9-11 to go along with a 4.35 ERA.
While the Mariners are right in the thick of the AL playoff race, the Blue Jays are on the cusp of elimination. Toronto has lost seven of eight after a 5-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday.
Jose Reyes went 3-for-4 and scored both runs for Toronto, which had snapped a six-game slide with Saturday's 6-3 victory. Drew Hutchison (10-13) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in four innings.
The Mariners swept the Blue Jays in three games from Aug. 11-13 in Seattle.
