Kennedy pitches Padres past Giants
Sep 27, 2014 - 5:39 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ian Kennedy tossed seven dominant innings in the San Diego Padres' 4-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday.Kennedy (13-13) allowed just an unearned run in seven innings while fanning six, improving to 9-4 lifetime in 20 starts against the Giants.
"When he turns the ball loose, it comes out good," said Padres manager Bud Black.
Kevin Quackenbush pitched the eighth and Joaquin Benoit nailed down the save. Rene Rivera drove in two runs in the victory.
The Giants clinched their third postseason appearance in five years on Thursday, but will have to play on the road in the single elimination wild card round. San Francisco will visit either St. Louis or Pittsburgh.
"We've played well on the road," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "We knew we had to run this one out to get the home-field game that we were looking for. It is encouraging that we have done a good job on the road."
Ryan Vogelsong (8-13) continued to struggle for the Giants, falling to 0-4 in his last five starts after allowing four runs -- three earned -- on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Vogelsong didn't allow an earned run through five innings, but a one-out double by Jedd Gyorko led to a three-run frame and the end of his outing. Yasmani Grandal followed the two-bagger with a walk and Seth Smith put the Padres up with an RBI double to right. Rivera then singled in a pair of runs to chase Vogelsong.
Earlier, San Diego opened the scoring in the first when Grandal's infield single plated Will Venable, who singled and advanced on a passed ball with one out.
The Giants tied it in the second on Brandon Crawford's sacrifice fly.
