Braves edge Phillies to end season on high note
Sep 29, 2014 - 12:06 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Emilio Bonifacio led off the game with a home run as the Atlanta Braves closed out the season with a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.Bonifacio drove Cole Hamels' fourth pitch over the wall in left-center field.
In his last outing against the Braves on Sept. 1, Hamels pitched the first six innings of a combined no-hitter.
The first four Atlanta batters reached against Hamels on Sunday afternoon. After walking Phil Gosselin and giving up consecutive singles to Freddie Freeman and Chris Johnson, Hamels retired 20 in a row until hitting Joey Terdoslavich with two outs in the seventh.
Hamels (9-9) was a hard-luck loser after tossing eight strong frames. He also had two of Philadelphia's six hits.
"I just made a couple bad pitches (in the first inning)," Hamels said.
The Braves (79-83) used a bullpen by committee, beginning with James Russell, after scheduled starter Alex Wood was scratched because of a mild left forearm strain.
Russell scattered two hits over four scoreless innings in his first start since 2011 with the Chicago Cubs. Luis Avilan (4-1) tossed two innings to pick up the win.
David Carpenter gave up singles to Freddy Galvis and pinch-hitter Grady Sizemore to begin the eighth. The Phillies (73-89) cut the lead to 2-1 when Ben Revere grounded into a double play.
Craig Kimbrel stranded the tying run at second base in the ninth to earn his 47th save.
"Our (relievers) were terrific. Russell set the tone and gave us four solid innings," said Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez.
Game Notes
Hamels allowed three earned runs or fewer in his 23rd straight start and became the first Phillies pitcher to throw at least 200 innings in five consecutive seasons since Steve Carlton did so in nine straight from 1972-1980 ... Sizemore snapped an 0-for-20 skid ... The Phillies were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position ... Atlanta went 7-18 in September.
