CC looks to bounce back against Blue Jays
Apr 9, 2015 - 1:26 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - CC Sabathia hopes to put an injury-plagued 2014 behind him on Thursday when he takes the hill in the finale of a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.Sabathia was limited to just eight starts in 2014 because of a right knee injury, but was pitching to a 5.28 ERA when he shut it down. The big left- hander hasn't inspired much confidence this spring, as he finished Grapefruit League action with an 8.10 ERA in just 10 innings pitched.
However, the 34-year-old former AL Cy Young Award winner has had success versus the Blue Jays over the course of his career, going 15-4 in 20 starts against them with a 3.13 ERA.
Toronto will counter with their No. 1 prospect according to MLB.com, left- hander Daniel Norris, who made the most of Marcus Stroman's knee injury and won a spot in the rotation.
The 21-year-old was terrific this spring, posting a 4-0 mark with a 2.93 ERA in 27 2/3 innings.
Norris made his big league debut last year as a September call-up and allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings. Before that, though, he went 12-2 with a 2.53 ERA in 26 outings (25 starts) between Class A, Double-A and Triple-A in 2014.
The Yankees got their first win of the season with an odd rally in the eighth inning Wednesday night that included a bloop double, a couple of hit batters, a wild pitch and a deflected ground ball.
At the end, it was Chase Headley's RBI single that punctuated the three-run flurry and give the Yankees a 4-3 win.
"We just took advantage of the miscues and some of the things that happened ... but we got it done and that's what mattered," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
Devon Travis had two hits for the Blue Jays and helped them score two of their three runs.
Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey gave up one run on four hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out four and left the game with the lead intact.
"I was happy with the overall result," Dickey said. "It was tough to get a feel for (my knuckleball) consistently because it was cold and the balls were a bit slick."
The Yankees won 11 of their 19 matchups with the Blue Jays last season.
