Wood tries to keep Braves unbeaten
Apr 12, 2015 - 1:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Wood received plenty of offensive support in his first start of 2015. The left-hander hopes the big bats come through again Sunday afternoon when the unbeaten Atlanta Braves close a three-game series against the New York Mets at Turner Field.Wood allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking three in five innings in a 12-2 win at Miami on Tuesday. He's 0-2 with a 4.10 ERA in five starts versus the Mets.
Bartolo Colon counters for New York. The 41-year-old righty gave up one run on three hits over six innings in an Opening Day win over Washington. The last time he faced the Braves, Colon suffered the loss in the Mets' 3-1 defeat on July 10, 2014 at Citi Field. He's 4-2 with a 2.00 ERA in six games against Atlanta and has given up only one homer over his 45 innings thrown. Colon is 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA at Turner Field.
On Saturday, Nick Markakis collected two hits and drove in a run while Freddie Freeman added a solo homer, as Atlanta took down the Mets by a 5-3 count. Eric Young, Andrelton Simmons and Christian Bethancourt each knocked in a run for the Braves, who have won five straight to begin the season.
It's their best start since 1994 when they won their first seven contests. The best start for the Braves came in 1982 when they won their first 13 games en route to the NL West title.
Julio Teheran (2-0) fanned five and walked four, but gave up two hits and three runs -- one earned -- over his six-plus inning outing. Jim Johnson tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save.
Kelly Johnson also picked up two hits for the Braves.
"Playing great and pitching has been phenomenal," Kelly Johnson said.
Juan Lagares and Travis d'Arnaud drove in a run apiece for the Mets, while Dillon Gee (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight hits and five runs across five full frames.
Prior to the contest, Major League Baseball issued an 80-game suspension to Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia after testing positive for PEDs.
"He just made a bad decision and is going to have to face it," Gee said.
New York beat Atlanta in 10 of 19 meetings last season.
