Mets set sights on eighth straight win

Apr 19, 2015 - 2:33 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Harvey and the New York Mets are off to a spectacular start this season. The right-hander aims to help the Mets complete their first-ever four-game sweep of the Miami Marlins Sunday afternoon.

New York is on a seven-game winning streak, its longest since capturing eight in a row, June 10-18, 2010. The Mets have also won eight in a row at Citi Field going back to last season. Their 6-0 start at home this year ties the club record set in 1985 as the best to begin a season.

"The closeness of this team -- a lot of guys came up and played together coming up through the organization," Mets outfielder Michael Cuddyer said. "Guys have gotten married at the same time. Guys have had children at the same time. So they're going through those life lessons at the same time. What that does is build a bond. That bond helps you get through that grind and builds the trust that gets you through a 162-game season."

Harvey allowed two homers in his home debut Tuesday when Philadelphia's Chase Utley and Cody Asche went deep, but the Mets hurler was able to record his second win without a loss this season. He's struck out 17 batters thus far.

Harvey has never beaten Miami in four career starts, going 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA.

Tom Koehler makes another trip to Citi Field, about an hour's ride from where he went to college at Stony Brook. The Marlins righty is 1-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 12 games (9 starts) versus the Mets. At Citi Field, he's 0-1 in five games (4 starts).

Koehler has pitched twice this season, both times against Atlanta. On Tuesday, he allowed six hits and a pair of runs over 5 1/3 innings in an 8-2 road victory.

On Saturday, Jacob deGrom fired seven shutout innings, Wilmer Flores smacked a two-run homer and the Mets held on for a 5-4 win.

"To walk out in that mound in this setting and be cool and calm, it's a tribute to the makeup he's got," Mets manager Terry Collins said of deGrom. "The Minor League coaches that had this guy, they said he's special. And they hit it right on the head."

DeGrom (2-1) struck out eight and scattered six hits for the Mets. Travis d'Arnaud cracked a solo shot and Eric Campbell posted two hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the triumph.

Mat Latos (0-3) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over five frames for the Marlins, who have dropped six of their last eight games.

Dee Gordon went 5-for-5 with three RBI and Michael Morse hit a solo shot in defeat.

The Mets have won 11 of the last 14 meetings.
