Baker gets the call for Dodgers in San Diego
Apr 26, 2015 - 2:21 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Scott Baker becomes the latest Los Angeles Dodgers starter on Sunday when they wrap up a three-game set with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. With Hyun-Jin Ryu still rehabbing from a shoulder impingement, Baker was signed on April 3 after being released by the New York Yankees at the end of Spring Training. He appeared in 25 games (8 starts) for the Texas Rangers last season and was 3-4 with a 5.47 ERA.
Baker is coming off a seven-inning shutout victory for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday.
Los Angeles may need another pitcher soon after righty Brandon McCarthy was forced to leave his outing on Saturday with elbow tightness. He left after serving up his major league-leading ninth home run.
The Dodgers, though, didn't need him on Saturday, as Andre Ethier had three RBI on three hits, including one of four home runs hit by Los in an 11-8 triumph. Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer and Ethier, Howie Kendrick and Juan Uribe each had two-run shots for the Dodgers, who have won the first two games of the series after being swept in San Francisco.
Justin Upton had two homers and drove in five runs and Wil Myers also homered for the Padres, who have lost four in a row.
Padres righty Ian Kennedy (0-1) came off the disabled list and was pounded for eight runs on eight hits and a walk in just 4 1/3 innings. Kennedy had been out since suffering a strained left hamstring in his first start of the season April 9 against San Francisco.
"I fell behind really early in the game," said Kennedy. "I'm more disappointed coming back and not having my best stuff."
Getting the call for the Padres on Sunday will be hard-throwing right-hander Brandon Morrow, who has yet to record a decision, but has pitched to a 3.15 ERA. Morrow gave up five runs and six hits in six innings to Colorado on Tuesday, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 7-6 win.
Morrow has never faced the Dodgers.
The Dodgers took two of three from the Padres to start the season.
