Hamels solid as Phillies down Cardinals
Apr 28, 2015 - 4:32 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Revere hit a two-run double during a three-run seventh inning, Cole Hamels tossed seven solid innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a 4-1 margin on Monday.Odubel Herrera went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Phillies. Hamels (1-2) gave up one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and four walks. The left-hander had been 0-4 with a 3.23 ERA since Sept. 23, 2014.
"I think personal wins aren't something I really focus on that much," Hamels said. "It's more for the team."
Matt Holliday drove in the lone run for the Cardinals, who have lost two in a row since a four-game winning streak. John Lackey (1-1) allowed three runs on nine hits over seven innings.
St. Louis confirmed Monday that ace Adam Wainwright will miss the rest of the season with a torn left Achilles, an injury he suffered over the weekend while batting.
The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the third when Matt Carpenter, Jhonny Peralta and Holliday hit three straight two-out singles. Matt Adams walked to load the bases but Mark Reynolds grounded out.
"He made pitches when he had to," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny of Hamels.
Philadelphia took the lead with a three-run seventh. Cody Asche and Carlos Ruiz singled to put men on the corners. Asche was tagged out at home when Freddy Galvis grounded into a fielder's choice. The runners moved up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, and both scored on Revere's ground-rule-double down the left-field line. Herrera followed with an RBI single to right.
The Phillies tacked on an insurance run off Matt Belisle in the ninth. Ruiz doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Darin Ruf grounded out.
Ken Giles tossed a scoreless eighth and Jonathan Papelbon left men on first and second in the ninth. Papelbon secured his 111th save as a Phillie, moving him just one behind Jose Mesa for the club record.
