Giants turn to Bumgarner in meeting with Padres

May 4, 2015 - 2:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner tries to follow up his most impressive start of the season on Monday when the San Francisco Giants open up a three- game series with the San Diego Padres at AT&T Park.

Bumgarner dominated the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, holding them to a run and five hits over eight innings. He also struck out nine and improved to 2-1 on the season, while lowering his ERA to 3.73.

"I felt like his pitches were a little bit more crisp than I've seen so far," said catcher Buster Posey.

San Diego roughed up Bumgarner earlier in the year to the tune of five runs in just three innings. For his career, though, he is 6-5 against the Padres with a 3.80 ERA in 19 games (18 starts).

San Francisco completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, as Tim Lincecum outdueled Jered Weaver and the Giants rolled to a 5-0 victory.

Lincecum (2-2) tossed eight scoreless innings for the first time since July 1, 2014, yielding just three hits with a walk while striking out four. He also had two of San Francisco's 10 hits.

"The starters the whole series really set the tone," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "(Lincecum) did it all today. Great day for Timmy."

San Francisco, which has won six in a row at home, has now won five of seven overall.

San Diego also wrapped up a series sweep on Sunday, as Justin Upton went 3- for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Padres to an 8-6 win. Derek Norris and Jedd Gyorko also went deep for the Padres, who have won three straight since a three-game losing streak.

James Shields (3-0) got the win but struggled in his outing, allowing five runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Heading to the hill for the Padres on Monday will be righty Tyson Ross, who has lost his last two starts. Ross was victimized by the red-hot Houston Astros on Tuesday, as they reached him for four runs and five hits in five innings. Ross is 1-2 on the year with a 4.55 ERA.

"It's early, but I've got to get better and start to do what I was doing last year," Ross said.

Ross' lone win this year came against the Giants back on April 12 and is 3-2 in eight games (6 starts) versus them with a 3.89 ERA.

San Diego took three of four from the Giants earlier in the season.
