Giants take on Padres aiming to extend good May start
May 5, 2015 - 2:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants have won the first four games of May and look to continue the trend Tuesday in the middle portion of a three-game series versus the San Diego Padres. The Giants posted a 2-0 win in Monday's series opener thanks to a splendid performance by 2014 World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner. The left-hander allowed only two hits across 7 1/3 shutout innings, struck out six and walked only one batter.
"He had great stuff. Good fastball, good slider, curveball, changeup," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He hit his spots. We got away with some mistakes because of the job he did."
Sergio Romo got the last two outs in the eighth and Santiago Casilla hurled a scoreless ninth for his eighth save.
Angel Pagan and Justin Maxwell had an RBI apiece for the Giants.
Ryan Vogelsong will start for the defending champion Giants Tuesday and has an 0-2 mark with a 9.31 earned run average in five appearances (3 starts). He lasted only three innings in a 7-3 loss at Los Angeles on April 29, allowing six runs and five hits, including four home runs.
Vogelsong faced the Padres on April 11 in a 10-2 defeat and gave up five runs -- four earned -- in 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander is 4-6 with a 5.66 ERA in 19 career games (10 starts) against San Diego.
The Padres were aiming for a fourth straight win until running into Bumgarner and the NL West-rival Giants. Tyson Ross pitched well in defeat and fell to 1-3 after yielding both runs in seven innings.
"There were some chopping base hits, some ground balls that just eluded our guys," Padres manager Bud Black said. "His stuff was fine."
Justin Upton and Yangervis Solarte compiled San Diego's two hits.
San Diego lost for the eighth time in 12 tries and will send Andrew Cashner to the mound Tuesday. Cashner is only 1-4 with a 2.61 earned run average in five starts and last toed the rubber in a 7-2 loss versus Houston last week. He gave up three runs, two of which were earned, in seven innings.
Cashner, a right-hander, struck out a season-high 10 batters and walked one. In 11 career games (5 starts) against the Giants, Cashner has a 2-3 record to go along with a 4.54 ERA.
San Diego took three of four from the Giants earlier this season.
