Freeman helps Braves down Phillies
May 7, 2015 - 3:57 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Freddie Freeman continues to swing a hot bat as he drove in three more runs on Wednesday to help the Atlanta Braves to a 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the rubber match of their three- game series.Freeman entered Wednesday's game with six hits and four RBI over his last three. He added to that total with a 3-for-4 effort, while Andrelton Simmons finished a triple shy of the cycle and scored three times in Atlanta's second straight win.
Mike Foltynewicz (2-0) picked up his second straight win to start his Braves career despite allowing four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. Foltynewicz also struck out seven and drove in a run, giving him three RBI this season.
"He's definitely got the fastball," said Braves outfielder Kelly Johnson. "If he continues to throw strikes like he did tonight, he's going to be pretty good for us."
Ryan Howard hit his 50th career home run against Atlanta among his three hits, and Ben Revere went 4-for-5 with three doubles for the Phillies.
Simmons set the tone for Atlanta with a solo homer in the bottom of the first against Jerome Williams (2-2), who surrendered six runs on eight hits in just 4 1/3 innings.
Freeman plated Simmons with a double in the fourth and the Braves chased Williams from the game with a four-run fifth.
Jace Peterson and Cameron Maybin hit consecutive singles to start the frame before Foltynewicz helped himself with a sacrifice fly. Nick Markakis scored Maybin with a single and Simmons singled to left before Jake Diekman came on to relieve Williams.
"Wasn't what I wanted tonight," said Williams. "Fifth inning unraveled a little bit for me."
The first batter Diekman faced was Freeman, who worked the count full before ripping a two-run double down the right-field line.
Howard, who helped the Phillies to their first run in the second inning when he grounded into a double-play, led off the top of the sixth with his solo home run that made it 6-2.
Foltynewicz put two on before departing the game in favor of Cody Martin, who gave up Jeff Francoeur's RBI single to center. Revere's third double of the game later in the inning scored Cesar Hernandez and put the Phillies within two runs.
Markakis doubled home Peterson in the bottom of the inning to get one of those runs back and make it 7-4.
After the seventh and eighth went by without a run, Jason Grilli ran into trouble trying to close out the game.
With two on and two outs, Darin Ruf lined a single to left just in front of Jonny Gomes to score Revere and cut the deficit to 7-5. Odubel Herrera struck out looking for the final out, giving Grilli his ninth save.
Game Notes
