Bumgarner gets nod for Giants versus Marlins
May 9, 2015 - 12:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner will try to build on his last start when he takes the mound Saturday for the San Francisco Giants against the Miami Marlins at AT&T Park.Bumgarner has won back-to-back trips to the mound and flirted with a no-hitter against San Diego in Sunday's 2-0 win, tossing 7 1/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts and one walk. He gave up two hits.
The left-hander and 2014 World Series MVP has yielded only one run in his previous two starts for the Giants, who are 4-2 when Bumgarner takes center stage. Bumgarner is 1-0 in three home starts and will face the Marlins for a sixth time. He is 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA over the first five starts.
San Francisco evened this four-game set with Friday's 6-0 win, as Casey McGehee connected for a grand slam in the second inning and Brandon Belt recorded four hits and a run scored.
"A good fastball down-and-away right there maybe is a double-play ball," Marlins starter Jarred Cosart said of McGehee's bases-clearing home run. "I've just got to execute the pitch better."
Tim Lincecum was on point in the start and scattered three hits across six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and three walks. Yusmeiro Petit tossed three shutout innings of relief.
The defending World Series champion Giants rebounded from Thursday's 7-2 loss in the series opener and won for the 11th time in 16 tries. The Giants are 6-2 on a 10-game homestand.
Miami has now lost four of its last six games and is 2-3 on a 10-game road trip. Cosart took the loss last night and pitched four innings, while Marcell Ozuna recorded two of the Marlins' three hits.
Dee Gordon did not play for the Marlins because of a sore right leg and is batting .560 during a 12-game hitting streak. Gordon leads the majors with a .437 batting average and is second with a .461 OBP.
"It's precautionary to make sure it doesn't lead into something," Marlins general manager Dan Jennings said of resting the speedy Gordon.
The Marlins will close the trek with three games at Dodger Stadium.
David Phelps will toe the rubber for Miami Saturday and is 1-0 with a 3.24 earned run average through six games (4 starts). Phelps has recorded two straight no-decisions and tossed 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball in a 6-4 loss at Washington on Monday.
Phelps, a right-hander, is in his first season with the Marlins and will face San Francisco for the first time.
