Cubs, Brewers tangle in rubber match at Miller Park
May 10, 2015 - 1:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Milwaukee Brewers go for their second series win of the season when they take on the Chicago Cubs in Sunday's rubber match of a three-game set at Miller Park. The Brewers ended a two-game slide and evened this series with Saturday's 12-4 pounding of the Cubs, as Jason Rogers hit a pinch-hit three-run homer during a five-run fifth inning. It was Rogers' first career home run.
"Last year I was a little upset that I wasn't starting," Rogers said. "Embracing that (pinch-hit) role this year."
Gerardo Parra was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI, while Jean Segura also went deep for Milwaukee. Khris Davis got into the action with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored, and the Brewers won for the fifth time in eight tries.
Kyle Lohse picked up the win and gave up four runs in five innings.
Milwaukee has scored six or more runs seven times in the last 13 games and will host the Chicago White Sox for three games after this series.
Matt Garza draws the start for the Brewers Sunday and has lost three of his past four trips to the mound. Garza was beaten by the Los Angeles Dodgers in Tuesday's 8-2 decision and yielded three runs in six innings to fall to 2-4 in six starts with a 4.58 ERA.
Garza has given up three runs or more in three of his previous four outings and has made three career starts against the Cubs, going 1-2 with a 5.82 ERA.
The Cubs will close out a seven-game trek Sunday and fell to 2-4 on the swing following their recent defeat.
Highly touted prospect Kris Bryant hit his first career homer -- a three-run shot in the top of the third inning. Bryant was homerless over his first 73 at-bats after hitting nine homers during spring training.
"It's kind of been a while, but I did it," Bryant said. "It's a cool feeling and we had fun with it. It would have been nice to get a win out of it, but it will still be a day I'll be able to remember."
Chicago starter Travis Wood absorbed the loss for surrendering six runs (4 earned) in four innings.
The Cubs will host the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates for seven games.
Kyle Hendricks will handle Chicago's pitching duties Sunday and he is 0-1 with a 5.61 earned run average through five starts. Hendricks allowed four runs over five innings of Tuesday's 7-4 loss at St. Louis and did not record a decision.
Hendricks has lasted at least five innings in four straight appearances and has won both of his career starts against Milwaukee.
Milwaukee won two of three meetings with the Cubs to begin the month of May.
