Giants hope to stay hot against Astros

May 13, 2015 - 2:21 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants have enjoyed a solid month of May so far and shoot for a two-game sweep of the Houston Astros Wednesday at Minute Maid Park.

The Giants are 8-3 this month and recorded an 8-1 win against the Astros Tuesday night thanks to Chris Heston's strong night on the mound.

Heston struck out a personal-best 10 batters in his first major league complete game, a two-hit gem in which he set down the final 22 Houston hitters after Jason Castro's solo homer in the second inning.

"It was nice to have the opportunity to close it out," Heston said. "That was awesome."

Matt Duffy was 3-for-4 with five RBI, Justin Maxwell added two hits, including an RBI single, and Angel Pagan finished 3-for-5 with a run scored to help the Giants end Collin McHugh's string of 11 consecutive winning decisions.

McHugh was hammered for seven runs, though four were unearned due to two Astros errors that opened the floodgates for a five-run fifth inning, and seven hits before being removed after 4 2/3 frames. The right-hander was dealt his first defeat since a 4-2 setback to Miami on July 27 of last season.

"I tried to limit (the damage) but wasn't able to stop the bleeding," McHugh said.

Brett Oberholtzer will join the Astros Wednesday in time to start against the Giants. Oberholtzer was bothered by a lat strain and blister in spring training and the left-hander made 24 starts in 2014, going just 5-13 with a 4.39 earned run average.

Oberholtzer will face the Giants for the first time this season.

San Francisco rolls out Tim Hudson Wednesday and he is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in six starts. Hudson earned his first win of the season on May 2 versus the LA Angels, then fell back into the loss column Thursday versus Miami.

Hudson allowed 15 hits and six runs over 6 2/3 innings of a 7-2 loss to the Marlins. He has allowed at least three runs in each of his past five outings. The right-hander has dominated the Astros in his career, going 5-0 with a 1.24 earned run average in seven starts (51 IP).

These former NL West rivals are facing each other for the first time since 2012, the last year the Astros were in the National League.
