Cardinals crush Mets again

May 21, 2015 - 5:19 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Adams and Jason Heyward each homered to help the St. Louis Cardinals to a 9-0 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night.

Kolten Wong had three hits with two RBI and two runs scored for St. Louis, while Matt Holliday also notched three hits to extend his on-base streak to 38 games.

"Right now, we're just clicking on all cylinders. Fortunately for us we are coming out on top," Wong said.

Carlos Martinez (4-2) was solid in his outing for the Cardinals, pitching 6 1/3 scoreless frames and striking out five.

Mets starter Bartolo Colon (6-3) was not up to par and had a lengthy streak that gave him a franchise record end. The right-hander, attempting to become the majors first seven-game winner, was roughed up for nine runs -- eight earned -- on 11 hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings.

The 41-year-old hadn't walked a batter in 48 2/3 innings until a fourth-inning pass to Matt Carpenter, but he did pass Bret Saberhagen's club record of 47 2/3 frames without one set in 1994.

The Cardinals cruised past the Mets 10-2 on Tuesday.

"We're not hitting the ball hard," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Everyone wants to talk about home runs, but we're not even barreling up some balls."

Jhonny Peralta knocked in Wong with his ground-rule double in the top of the first inning, but the Mets got something going in the third when Colon reached on an error by Yadier Molina to begin the frame. Martinez got Colon to chop a pitch right out in front of the plate where Molina attempted to bare hand the spinning ball, but couldn't come up with the play.

Curtis Granderson and Lucas Duda then singled around a strikeout by Eric Campbell to load the bases, but the lack of speed from Colon proved to be costly as Michael Cuddyer lined out to a diving Randal Grichuk in center. Martinez worked out of trouble with a groundout by Daniel Murphy to end the inning.

The Cardinals broke the game open with a crooked fourth inning.

Heyward started it off with a leadoff homer to right center before Grichuk reached on a throwing error by Campbell. Wong singled to drive Grichuk home and Carpenter walked to set up Holliday's RBI single to center for a 4-0 edge. Adams then blasted his fourth homer of the season a batter later to extend the lead to 7-0.

Grichuk chased Heyward home with a double to left in the fifth and scored on Wong's RBI knock up the middle.

Game Notes

After Jon Niese allowed eight runs on Tuesday, it marked the first time since 2011 that the Mets had two starting pitchers give up eight runs in back-to- back starts ... New York's Jacob deGrom will face Jaime Garcia in the series finale on Thursday. Garcia will make his season debut.
