Mets salvage split behind deGrom, Duda

May 21, 2015 - 9:51 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom was nearly flawless on the mound, giving up just one hit and no walks in eight innings to lead the New York Mets to a 5-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday afternoon at Citi Field.

DeGrom (5-4), last year's NL Rookie of the Year, struck out 11 and retired the final 23 batters he faced after giving up a one-out single to Matt Carpenter in the first inning.

"He was outstanding today," Mets manager Terry Collins said about the right- hander, who threw 79 of his 104 pitches for strikes.

"That's what we saw most of last year," Collins added. "Strike after strike, pounding it down in the zone and changing eye level."

Jeurys Familia allowed a two-out single to Kolten Wong in the ninth, but he struck out Carpenter to complete the two-hit shutout.

Lucas Duda hit two homers, drove in four and scored three runs for the Mets, who salvaged a split in the four-game series.

St. Louis' Jaime Garcia (0-1) made his season debut, giving up two runs on five hits and walking five in seven innings. It was left-hander's first start in the majors since undergoing thoracic outlet surgery last July to alleviate numbness and tingling in his pitching arm and hand.

"Far as how he went about his business, it looked usual to me," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said about Garcia. "I thought it was a great approach from the beginning. We just needed to get some offense for him."

New York didn't get its first hit off Garcia until the fourth and wound up stringing together three in a row to produce a run. Duda, who walked, came home on a bases-loaded single by John Mayberry Jr.

Duda homered to right-center field off Garcia in the sixth for a 2-0 lead. In the eighth, Duda crushed the first pitch from lefty reliever Randy Choate over the wall in right center for a three-run blast.

He has hit five home runs this season, four against left-handers.

DeGrom improved to 10-1 with a 1.19 ERA over his last 12 home starts ... The Mets are 10-2 in day games this season ... New York left fielder Michael Cuddyer went 3-for-3 with a walk ... The Cardinals optioned reliever Sam Tuivailala to Triple-A Memphis to make room for Garcia on the roster.
