Yanks crushed by Rangers for 9th loss in 10 games

May 23, 2015 - 11:53 PM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - A 10-run third inning and Nick Martinez's seven solid frames carried the Texas Rangers to a fourth straight victory, a 15-4 ambushing of the still-reeling New York Yankees.

Shin-Soo Choo highlighted the huge inning with a three-run homer and Prince Fielder added a two-run shot later on in the Rangers' second double-digit scoring output against New York in less than 24 hours.

Fielder, who homered twice and had four RBI in Texas' 10-9 win in Friday's series opener, finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Choo knocked in four of the 10 third-inning runs and also scored three times, while Elvis Andrus had two hits and three RBI in the rout.

"Our guys have been working on a lot of things since spring training and you can really see that it's starting to pay off," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "I'm really proud of the effort they have put in."

Martinez (4-0) did his part on the mound as well, yielding solo homers to Carlos Beltran and Didi Gregorius but just three other hits to post his seventh quality start of the season.

CC Sabathia (2-6) wasn't nearly as sharp in the Yankees' season-high fifth straight defeat and ninth in 10 games. The veteran lefty lasted just 2 1/3 innings and was rocked for six runs and seven hits.

"I feel bad for our fans," Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner said afterward. "We had a nice turnout, a beautiful day to play baseball and we were pretty bad."

Sabathia struck out four while breezing through the first two innings, but unraveled in the third as five straight Rangers reached base to begin the eruption.

A leadoff walk to nine-hole hitter Jake Smolinski preceded four straight singles, with Choo driving in the initial run and two more coming across when Beltran misplayed Fielder's base hit to right. Adrian Beltre followed with an opposite-field hit that forced Sabathia's exit.

The carnage continued with Esmil Rogers on in relief, as Andrus brought home Fielder and Beltre with a single to shallow right center for a 5-0 lead. After Adam Rosales was hit with a pitch, Carlos Corporan socked an RBI ground-rule double and Smolinski plated Rosales with a sacrifice fly.

Choo then capped the inning by hooking a Rogers sinker just inside the left- field foul pole for a 10-0 advantage.

"Sometimes when you get that first RBI, it sets the tone and everything starts after that," said Choo of the barrage.

Martinez worked around a pair of first-inning walks to set down 15 of the next 16 New York hitters, with Alex Rodriguez's infield single in the fourth the only blemish. Beltran ended that stretch with a homer to right center in the sixth that brought the Yankees within 13-1, as Texas tacked on three more runs in the top of the frame.

Rogers began the inning with walks to Choo and Fielder and Beltre singled to load the bases. A wild pitch and Andrus' sac fly extended the margin to 12-0 before Beltre came around on a Rosales single.

Fielder's latest long ball came with Smolinski aboard in the seventh and accounted for Texas' final two runs. Gregorius got one back with his solo blast off Martinez in the Yankees' half of the inning.

New York did put up a pair of runs off Anthony Bass in the ninth. John Ryan Murphy drove in Gregorius with a triple and crossed the plate on Slade Heathcott's groundout.

Game Notes

Position player Garrett Jones pitched part of the ninth inning for New York, recording the final two outs while issuing one walk ... Beltran extended his hitting streak to 13 games, during which he's homered three times with nine RBI ... Martinez, who played collegiately at nearby Fordham University, improved to 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA in four day starts this season. Seven of his nine career wins have come in afternoon games ... The 10 runs allowed in the third were the most the Yankees have given up in a single inning since Cleveland put up 14 in the second on April 18, 2009 ... Sabathia is now 0-6 with a 9.42 ERA in six Yankee Stadium starts since the beginning of last season.
