Stanton, Marlins continue set with Rockies
Jun 6, 2015 - 1:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Giancarlo Stanton is tied for the major league lead in home runs with 18 and has gone deep in three straight games for the Miami Marlins.Stanton and the Marlins go for a series win over the Colorado Rockies in Saturday's middle test of a three-game series at Coors Field.
The Marlins made it three straight wins and five in seven tries with Friday's 6-2 triumph, as Stanton clubbed a monster shot to center field and J.T. Realmuto finished 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Tom Koehler pitched well for the win and limited the Rockies to a run in seven innings with six strikeouts and one walk.
"Tone setting effort by him," said Marlins manager Dan Jennings. "Coming down the stretch there, couple of big outs, especially in the seventh inning. Just a tremendous night by (Koehler). He set the tone."
David Phelps will take the mound for the streaking Marlins Saturday and is 2-2 with a 3.50 earned run average in 11 games (9 starts). Phelps is winless (0-2) in his last four appearances and did not record a decision in Sunday's 4-3 loss at the New York Mets, charged with three runs (2 earned) in six frames.
Phelps has made one career start against Colorado and allowed two runs in six innings of work.
The Rockies have alternated wins and losses in their last six games and are 2-3 on a 10-game homestand.
Eddie Butler didn't have his best stuff in the start for the Rockies and permitted all six runs and 11 hits across 5 1/3 innings.
"Kind of a weird outing," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "(Butler) Didn't get hit very hard. Lot of the hits had eyes."
Colorado had scored four or more runs in eight straight games and hopes to get some support for Chris Rusin tonight. Rusin is 1-0 with a 0.77 earned run average in two games (1 start) and prevailed with 4 2/3 shutout innings in Sunday's 4-1 victory at Philadelphia.
Rusin threw seven innings of one-run ball in a 2-1 loss at Cincinnati on May 26 and has never faced the Marlins.
Kyle Kendrick was the original starter Saturday, but he was moved to Sunday after Jorge De La Rosa's start was pushed back to Tuesday.
Miami went 4-3 against Colorado last season and the two ballclubs will play four games in south Florida next week.
