D-backs target series win over Mets

Jun 7, 2015 - 1:56 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks target a third straight series victory when they close out a four-game set Sunday versus the New York Mets at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks won two of three in Milwaukee and opened this seven-game homestand by taking two of three from Atlanta. They lost the opener to the Mets on Thursday, but have responded with back-to-back wins, including Saturday's 2-1 verdict.

Welington Castillo's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference for Arizona and made a winner out of Randall Delgado. Chase Anderson allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings in the start.

"That was fantastic," said D-backs manager Chip Hale. "We know this guy can hit, he just needs at-bats ... he picked a good time to hit his first home run for us."

Arizona will play its next eight games on the road against Los Angeles, San Francisco and the LA Angels.

Josh Collmenter will handle pitching duties for the Diamondbacks Sunday and is 3-5 with a 5.03 earned run average in 11 starts. Collmenter is 0-2 in his last five appearances and has posted three straight no-decisions, including a 7-6 win versus Atlanta on Tuesday.

Collmenter gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings and has permitted 19 runs during his winless stretch. The right-hander has faced the Mets eight times (3 starts) in his career, going 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA.

The Mets fell to 2-4 on this seven-game road trip and took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a home run by Juan Lagares.

Bartolo Colon got the start and his only mistake was the home run by Castillo. Colon gave up five hits and struck out seven in seven innings.

"He pitched his heart out tonight, but we couldn't get him any runs. That's just part of the game," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

New York will head home for an eight-game stay versus San Francisco, Atlanta and Toronto.

The Mets will send Jacob deGrom to the bump Sunday and the young right-hander is 6-4 with a 2.41 earned run average in 11 starts. New York has won each of deGrom's last four starts (3-0) and he fired eight scoreless innings of two- hit ball in a 7-0 drubbing of San Diego on Monday.

DeGrom has been reached for three runs in his past four trips to the mound and will face Arizona for the first time. He is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in four road assignments this season.

The Mets were 4-2 versus the D-backs last season.
