Homers lift Yankees to sweep of Angels
Jun 7, 2015 - 9:49 PM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brett Gardner broke a tie game with a three- run homer in the fifth inning as the Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Angels with a 6-2 win on Sunday.Jose Pirela hit his first big-league homer and added a double, while Chris Young contributed a solo shot in the Yankees' sixth straight victory.
CC Sabathia (3-7) experienced a roller-coaster day on the mound but still picked up his first home win, perhaps softening the blow of being ejected just when he was finding his groove.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi was barking at home plate umpire Dan Bellino from the dugout in the sixth, and Sabathia voiced his opinion on Bellino's strike zone after getting out of the inning.
Bellino wasted no time tossing them both, but Justin Wilson, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller combined for three hitless innings to render the ejections moot.
Sabathia struck out seven and allowed two runs and five hits, while his counterpart, C.J. Wilson (3-5), was touched for five runs on six hits over seven frames. Wilson struck out eight and did not issue a walk.
Mike Trout and Albert Pujols hit back-to-back homers off Sabathia in the first inning, but the Angels were quiet from there and dropped their fifth straight.
"We need to step up our game and play more consistent baseball," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
The Yankees pushed a run across in the third when Pirela led off with a double off the wall, moved up on a fly ball and scored on Didi Gregorius' groundout.
They pulled even in the fifth on Young's leadoff blast, and after a pair of one-out singles, Gardner took one down the right-field line and over the wall for his fifth home run of the year.
"(Wilson) missed with a fastball in and I beat him to the spot," Gardner said. "I was ready for it."
Pirela's personal milestone came in the seventh.
