Streaking Tigers wrap short set with Cubs

Jun 10, 2015 - 2:27 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers go for a quick sweep of the Chicago Cubs when they close out a two-game series Wednesday at Comerica Park.

The Tigers have won three straight on the heels of an eight-game losing streak and recorded a 6-0 win on Tuesday. Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Ian Kinsler added two hits and drove in two runs, and Nick Castellanos added a pair of RBI.

Rajai Davis made a home run-robbing catch of David Ross in the second inning and collected two hits with two runs scored.

"I think the closer I got to the warning track, and I'd seen how high it was, I started measuring my steps then and looking back and trying to make sure I know where the wall is," Davis said. "I think that was key, just knowing where the wall is and knowing where the ball's coming down."

Anibal Sanchez benefited from the great catch and run support, and threw 7 2/3 shutout innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. He scattered six hits.

Detroit is scheduled to host Cleveland and Cincinnati on this seven-game homestand and will send Shane Greene to the bump Wednesday. He is 4-5 with a 5.40 earned run average in 12 starts and looks to stop a personal three-game slide, which continued with Thursday's 7-5 loss to Oakland.

Greene gave up six runs (4 earned) and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings and has given up 15 runs during his losing streak. He has never faced the Cubs and is 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA in six home starts.

The Cubs had won two straight and three of four games, and fell to 4-4 on a nine-game road trip with last night's loss. Cubs ace Jon Lester struggled in only 4 1/3 innings, charged with five runs and nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Lester has lost three straight starts and the Cubs are winless in his previous four appearances.

"Not good, not good, not getting deep in games" Lester said. "I gotta do a better job of pitching innings, that's what it comes down to."

Starlin Castro had a team-best two hits for the Cubs.

Chicago will start a six-game homestand this weekend versus Cincinnati and Cleveland.

Jake Arrieta will toe the rubber for the Cubs Wednesday and has a 5-4 record to go along with a 3.04 earned run average in 11 starts. He was 0-1 in three outings until tossing six innings of one-run ball in a 2-1 victory at Washington on Thursday.

Arrieta struck out eight and did not issue a walk for a second straight start. He has 13 K's in that time. Arrieta has faced the Tigers three times in his career and is 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA.

The Cubs and Tigers have not faced each other since the 2012 season.
