Mariners try to break the brooms out on Tribe
Jun 11, 2015 - 11:04 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - J.A. Happ hopes for some run support on Thursday when the Seattle Mariners try to complete a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.Happ was terrific on Friday against Tampa Bay, but had nothing to show for it, despite seven scoreless innings and the Mariners fell, 1-0. Happ had surrendered just two runs in his previous outing against Cleveland, which also resulted in a no-decision.
"You win as a team, lose as a team, whether it's 10-9 or 1-0," said Happ, who is 3-1 on the year with a 3.31 ERA. "
Happ has faced the Indians four times (3 starts) and is 2-0 against them with a 1.89 ERA.
Cleveland, meanwhile, turns to righty Shaun Marcum, who is 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA. Marcum suffered his first loss on Friday to Baltimore, as he yielded three runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Marcum beat the Mariners two starts ago and is 2-2 with a 3.72 ERA against them in nine games (6 starts).
Seattle has won the first two games of this series and on Wednesday Kyle Seager's grand slam led the Mariners to a 9-3 victory.
After three walks by Trevor Bauer (5-3) loaded the bases in the third, Seager's home run barely cleared the yellow line at the top of the right-field wall to give Seattle a 4-0 edge.
Bauer allowed six runs and five walks in 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He entered the game having won three of his previous four starts with the loss coming at Seattle on May 29.
"He's a good pitcher, and he just didn't have his best stuff," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon.
Taijuan Walker (3-6) tossed his third straight quality start, allowing a run on eight hits in six innings with six strikeouts. Against Bauer on May 29, he fired eight scoreless innings for the best start in his young career.
"We had hits," said Cleveland manager Terry Francona. "We got those chances, and we just didn't cash in."
Cleveland took three of four from the M's when these teams met up at Safeco Field to wrap up the month of May.
