Tigers' Price takes on Indians

Jun 12, 2015 - 2:33 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - David Price attempts to continue his mastery of the Cleveland Indians on Friday when the Detroit Tigers open a three-game series against them at Comerica Park.

Price has dominated the Tribe over the course of his career, going 7-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 10 starts. That, coupled with the fact that he is coming off one of his best showings of the season could spell trouble for the Indians.

The former AL Cy Young Award winner went the distance to beat the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, as he allowed one run, five hits and struck out 11 to improve to 5-2, while lowering his ERA to 2.70.

Price has won four of his last five decisions and is pitching to a 1.48 ERA over his last four starts.

"He is really more about the edges of the plate and his changeup, which is always kind of in the area which keeps the pitch count down," manager Brad Ausmus said.

Cleveland will oppose Price with an impressive pitcher of its own in righty Danny Salazar, who leads the majors in strikeouts per nine innings and is 6-1 on the year with a 3.50 ERA.

Salazar, who also gets the third most run support in the majors at 7.30 runs per game, beat Baltimore on Saturday, as he allowed a run, six hits and struck out 10 in seven innings. He is now averaging 11.82 strikeouts per nine innings.

Cleveland avoided a three-game sweep and snapped a three-game losing streak on Thursday, as Shaun Marcum tossed seven strong innings to lead the Indians over the Seattle Mariners, 6-0.

"The guys scored a lot of runs behind me and played good defense," Marcum said. "It was a good day for everybody."

Detroit, meanwhile, saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday with a 12-3 shellacking at the hands of the Chicago Cubs.

The Tigers have won five of six from the Tribe this season.
