Buchholz, Red Sox top Blue Jays
Jun 30, 2015 - 5:06 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Clay Buchholz fired eight innings of one-run ball and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 in the opener of a four-game set.Buchholz (6-6) scattered five hits and struck out five for the Red Sox, who have won four of their last six games.
"I like pitching here," Buchholz said. "I like the mound here. I've said it before, I'm just comfortable on it.
Mookie Betts had two hits and scored a pair of runs, and Xander Bogaerts smacked a two-run double in the triumph. Koji Uehara blanked the Blue Jays in the ninth to notch his 17th save of the season.
R.A. Dickey (3-8) surrendered three runs on six hits and three walks over six frames for Toronto, which had won four of its previous six contests coming in.
"He threw a lot of first-pitch strikes," Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson said of Buchholz.
The Red Sox plated two runs in the third and another in the fifth to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Jackie Bradley Jr. and Brock Holt sandwiched walks around a Betts single to load the bases to begin the third. Bogaerts then whacked a seldom-used fastball from the knuckleballer Dickey over the head of Jose Bautista in right to bring home Bradley and Betts.
Three straight pop outs by David Ortiz, Pablo Sandoval and Mike Napoli ended the threat.
Betts laced a triple into the gap in left-center to lead off the fifth and scored on Holt's bloop single to make it 3-0.
Donaldson's RBI double down the third-base line cut the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth.
