Hawks top Wizards, win 11th straight at home

Feb 5, 2015 - 5:08 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - After having their franchise-record winning streak halted, it looks like the Atlanta Hawks are all set to start another one.

Jeff Teague registered 26 points with eight assists in the Hawks' 105-96 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Atlanta, which had its 19-game winning streak end at New Orleans on Monday, got back in the win column for its 11th straight victory at Philips Arena.

Al Horford went for 21 points and 13 rebounds despite shooting 10-of-24 from the floor, while DeMarre Carroll and Paul Millsap had 14 and 11 points, respectively, in the win.

The Hawks now set their sights on the best from the West, the Golden State Warriors, who will visit on Friday.

John Wall tallied 24 points with nine assists, Bradley Beal had 23 points and Nene added 17 points for Washington. The Wizards have dropped four straight games for the first time since Dec. 6-14, 2013.

"It was a heck of a matchup at the point guard position between (Wall) and Teague," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said.

Carroll's 3-pointer jump-started a 9-2 run that Mike Scott closed with a posterizing dunk over Beal for a 90-79 Atlanta lead with under seven minutes left in the fourth. Beal made 2-of-3 free throws prior to Paul Pierce's jumper that cut Washington's deficit to seven, but a crucial technical foul was called on Wizards coach Randy Wittman almost a minute later.

After Pierce was whistled for a shooting foul on Carroll from beyond the arc, Wittman was displeased with the call and given a technical. Kyle Korver hit the technical free throw and Carroll followed with two from the line to extend the margin to 96-85 with 4 1/2 minutes to play.

Teague converted a driving layup on Marcin Gortat moments later, was fouled and made the subsequent free throw to maintain Atlanta's 11-point lead with under two minutes left. Horford then followed his own miss the next trip down to push the margin to 105-92 as the Hawks got back on track.

The deficit was 12 for Washington early in the third when Wall's jumper kicked off a 12-3 run that Gortat capped with two free throws for a 69-66 game. Wall then gave the Wizards a 74-73 lead late in the quarter before Pero Antic and Dennis Schroder netted successive baskets for a three-point Hawks lead heading to the fourth.

"They had us kind of on our heels there in the third quarter," Budenholzer added.

It was a slow start to the game for the Hawks, but Millsap made a 3-pointer with just under five minutes left in the opening frame that started a 16-3 run to end the quarter.

Kent Bazemore hit a 3-pointer after Korver and Antic each converted from beyond the arc, then Schroder's jumper closed the scoring in the quarter and gave the Hawks a 29-18 lead entering the second.

Wall converted back-to-back 3s around a Millsap layup that cut Washington's deficit to eight with five minutes to play in the half. Atlanta scored eight straight points, however, later in the second which helped it take a 59-46 edge into the break.

"They are a good team," Wittman said. "I think it was the last 2:40 of the first half, we're battling... then they have a spurt where we come in and let them score six or eight to end the half."

Game Notes

The Hawks' starting five were jointly named Eastern Conference Players of the Month on Wednesday. Millsap, Horford, Teague, Carroll and Korver became just the second set of teammates to earn the monthly honor after helping the Hawks go 17-0 in January ... Atlanta has taken all three meetings with the Wizards this season ... The Hawks have not lost back-to-back games since Nov. 5-7 ... Washington has lost 13 of its last 14 visits to Atlanta.
