Nets try to start new home win streak, host Orlando
Apr 13, 2014 - 2:17 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Currently in the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race, the Brooklyn Nets welcome the Orlando Magic to the Barclays Center Sunday night. The Nets lost their remote chance at an Atlantic Division crown when they fell to the Atlanta Hawks Friday night. Brooklyn fell, 93-88, and snapped a franchise-best 15-game home winning streak.
"I'm glad this streak is over with," said Nets guard Joe Johnson. "Let's start another one for another month and a half, two months."
Brooklyn is just 1 1/2 games clear of the Washington Wizards for the fifth seed.
Mason Plumlee had 17 points off the bench in the Nets' first setback at the Barclays Center since Jan. 31. Marcus Thornton added 14 points for Brooklyn, which played without point guard Deron Williams due to a sore knee. Jorge Gutierrez started in Williams' place and managed 11 points.
Guard Shaun Livingston (sprained toe) and swingman Alan Anderson (sore abdominal) also sat out for Brooklyn in addition to Williams.
Paul Pierce scored 13 points and became the 18th player in NBA history to score 25,000 points.
Brooklyn closes the season with a home game against the New York Knicks on Tuesday and a road tilt versus the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.
The Magic are headed to the lottery once again and had a two-game winning streak snapped Friday night with a 96-86 home setback to the Washington Wizards.
Arron Afflalo scored a game-high 19 points, Kyle O'Quinn added 13 points and nine rebounds and Jameer Nelson finished with 12 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds for the Magic.
"The offense got stagnant and we started to stand around too much on the offensive end," said Nelson. "They turned up the pressure a little bit and it got physical."
The Magic raced out to a 29-17 lead after 12 minutes, but were outscored in each quarter after that. Orlando committed 18 turnovers, which led to 23 Washington points.
Orlando travels to the Windy City to face the Chicago Bulls on Monday, then concludes the regular season Wednesday night with a home contest against the Indiana Pacers.
The Magic have won two of three against the Nets this season, including a big win in Orlando on Wednesday. Brooklyn has won three straight as the host in this series.
