Nets edge Knicks for third straight win
Feb 7, 2015 - 4:19 AM Brooklyn, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarrett Jack scored nine of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Brooklyn Nets continue their strong recent play with a 92-88 decision over the New York Knicks at Barclays Center.Jack added eight assists and Brook Lopez compiled 22 points and nine rebounds in Brooklyn's third straight victory, its longest win streak since a three- game run from Dec. 29-Jan. 2. Joe Johnson added 13 points, nine of which came in the final period as well, along with 11 rebounds in the triumph.
The Knicks battled back from a 17-point second-quarter deficit to move in front early in the fourth, but struggled down the stretch to fall for the 11th time in 12 road outings.
"We were fighting," said New York forward Lance Thomas. "(The Nets) were relentless in their effort. The end result wasn't what we wanted, but we fought."
Carmelo Anthony finished with 21 points for New York but went just 6-of-23 from the floor. Jose Calderon and Thomas tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively, in the loss.
The Knicks grabbed a 75-73 lead on Tim Hardaway Jr.'s 3-pointer with 9:39 remaining, then were held scoreless for nearly five minutes as Brooklyn moved in front to stay with a pivotal 8-0 run.
Johnson and Jack each delivered key baskets during the surge, which Bojan Bogdanovic finished with a step-back jumper that put the Nets up 81-75 with 4:52 left.
New York countered with a 7-2 push and moved within 83-82 on a Langston Galloway triple with 3:22 remaining, and it remained a one-point game entering the final minute when Johnson drew a double team before swinging the ball out to Jack, who buried a back-breaking open trey for a 90-86 edge with just 13.8 seconds to go.
"Coach (Lionel Hollins) drew up a beautiful play," said Jack of the shot. "We tried to put them in a situation that if they didn't help on Joe, he was going to have a clear lane to the basket. You've got to give Joe credit for being a willing and able passer. I got a clean look and just tried to knock it down."
The Knicks trailed by 12 points during the initial stages of the second half before getting back in it by embarking on a 14-4 run. Calderon ignited the spurt by knocking down a pair of 3-pointers, then later fed Thomas for a successful jumper that trimmed Brooklyn's lead to 61-59 with five minutes left in the stanza.
New York forged ahead entering the fourth on a Anthony jumper that snapped a 68-68 deadlock.
The Nets got the game off to a strong start, hitting eight of their first 11 field goal attempts and building a 21-8 lead following an early 13-2 tear. Brooklyn shot 60 percent for the opening quarter and owned a 29-21 advantage at period's end.
Brooklyn stretched the margin to 40-23 early in the second by beginning the frame on a 13-4 sequence, but Anthony's 3-point play capped an 8-1 stretch later on that brought New York within 45-41 with 2:55 left in the half.
The Nets scored the next six points, however, and went into the break up 53-45 behind Lopez's 14 points and 10 from Kevin Garnett. The duo combined to go 12- of-17 from the floor.
