Wichita State uses strong second half to beat Western Kentucky

Nov 12, 2013 - 9:02 AM Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Fred VanVleet had 17 points and four steals as the 16th-ranked Wichita State Shockers beat the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers by a 66-49 margin.

Kadeem Coleby tallied 13 points for the Shockers (2-0), who opened the season with a 93-50 win over Emporia State on Saturday. Cleanthony Early added 11 points and nine rebounds.

T.J. Price and Aleksej Rostov each had 12 points for the Hilltoppers (0-1), who went 20-16 and lost to Kansas in second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

The Shockers started the second half on a 14-2 run to create some distance. Coleby tallied seven points during the surge that Early capped with a layup for a 44-30 lead.

Rostov's three-point play and Caden Dickerson's 3-pointer got Western Kentucky within nine, 51-42, with 8:44 to play.

Tekele Cotton responded with four straight points for Wichita State. VanVleet added two free throws with 6:14 remaining to make it a 57-42 contest.

The Hilltoppers held a 24-19 lead following Price's 3-pointer with 5:13 left in the first half.

But the Shockers closed out the half on an 11-4 run. VanVleet and Early each had four points during the spurt that ended with the home team taking a 30-28 edge into the locker room.

Game Notes

Despite the loss, Western Kentucky leads the all-time series by a 3-2 margin ... Wichita State shot 46.2 percent from the floor and went 15-of-22 from the foul line ... The Hilltoppers shot just 28.6 percent from the field and went 7-of-30 from beyond the arc.
