No. 24 Pittsburgh 63, Appalachian State 56

Nov 27, 2009 - 8:44 PM PITTSBURGH(AP) -- Shayla Scott had a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds as No. 24 Pittsburgh came from behind to avoid an upset, beating Appalachian State 63-56 Friday.

The Mountaineers (1-3) came into the game with a No. 269 RPI and were picked eighth in the preseason Southern Conference poll. But they led by as many as seven and did not trail most of the second half.

The seven-point margin of victory was the Panthers' largest lead of the game.

It was the second consecutive game Pitt (5-0) was challenged at home by a sub-.500 team. The Panthers beat St. Francis (Pa.) 75-70 on Tuesday.

Freshman Ashlen Dewart had 16 points and Catherine Williams 14 to lead Appalachian State.

Jania Sims added 16 points for the Panthers.
