NC State coach Yow hopes to return Monday

Dec 23, 2008 - 11:07 PM RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow hopes to be back on the bench for the Wolfpack's next game against Jacksonville State on Monday.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, Yow missed Monday's game at Columbia, which ended a five-day trip for the team in the New York area. She was on the bench for Saturday's 71-65 loss at Seton Hall.

Monday marked the first contest that Yow has missed since taking a 16-game leave of absence during the 2006-07 season after suffering a reoccurrence of breast cancer.

"I feel better now that we are back home and have every intention of coaching on Monday, Lord willing," she said.

"Coaching with metastatic breast cancer since late 2004, Coach Yow felt the more severe cold in New York City worsened symptoms that normally are tolerable," said Dr. Mark Graham, her oncologist.

Earlier this season, the 66-year-old Yow coached her 1,000th game at North Carolina State, a 46-42 victory over Mississippi State on December 14. She is in her 34th season as coach of the Wolfpack.
