Cowboys look to tie franchise record for wins

IRVING, Texas (Ticker) -- In the Dallas Cowboys' illustrious history, only one team has won 13 games in a season. In 1992, Troy Aikman led the Cowboys to a 13-3 record and the first of three Super Bowls in a four-year span.

The Cowboys look to match the mark achieved by the 1992 club when they host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in an NFC East clash.

Dallas returns homes as NFC East champions for the first time since 1998 but it was fortunate to escape with a 28-27 win at Detroit last week.

Quarterback Tony Romo continued his magical season, tossing a 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jason Witten with 16 seconds remaining as the Cowboys rallied from a 27-14 deficit in the fourth quarter.

Witten enjoyed a huge day, setting career highs with 15 receptions and 138 receiving yards.

Romo, who has passed for 3,654 yards and 35 touchdowns this season, set a franchise mark by throwing a touchdown pass in his 17th straight game.

But while the quarterback has gotten must of the attention, Witten also is enjoying a stellar season.

His 15 catches last week tied Kellen Winslow's single-game league record for the most catches by a tight end since the 1970 NFL merger.

With three games left in the regular season, Witten has a team-high 80 catches for 955 yards and seven touchdowns and is almost certain to break his 2004 career high of 87 catches.

The Cowboys posted their seventh straight victory and moved closer to locking up home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

Dallas needs only a win to clinch a first-round bye. With a win and a Green Bay loss at St. Louis, the Cowboys will secure the NFC's top seed.

The Cowboys also have moved within one victory of the franchise-record eight-game winning streak set in 1978.

This weekend, Dallas receiver Terrell Owens will look to further torment his former team.

Banished from Philadelphia two years ago, Owens caught 10 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys' 38-17 victory at Lincoln Field on November 10.

The Eagles have dropped three straight to all but fall out of playoff contention one year after winning the NFC East.

Donovan McNabb returned last week after missing two games with a sprained ankle but passed for only 179 yards in a 16-13 loss to the New York Giants.

It marked the fifth time this season the Eagles lost a game by four points or less and their third straight.
