Sharks edge Blues to end 7-game skid
Feb 20, 2013 - 6:42 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Tim Kennedy produced the game-winning score late in the third period, as the San Jose Sharks ended a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 decision over the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center.Joe Thornton also scored and Antti Niemi came up with 25 saves for the Sharks, who hadn't won since a Jan. 31 triumph capped a streak of seven consecutive victories from the start of the season.
"They're a big, strong team over there and to get two points in this building is huge," said Kennedy. "You know we have to do a lot of traveling in a short span here and anytime you can get a win on the road it's big."
Patrik Berglund provided the sole offense for the Blues, whose three-game win streak came to an end. Jake Allen played well in defeat, stopping 23 shots.
"This is a common thing we've been doing these past four or five games," said St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock. "There's too many passengers on this team who aren't pulling their own weight. When you put skill ahead of work, maybe you get away with it for a little bit, but it catches up with you."
San Jose went up by a goal with 6:58 remaining in the third period. Tommy Wingels threaded a soft lead pass into the St. Louis zone on the left wing between three defenders, and Kennedy fired away from the outer portion of the left circle past an unscreened Allen.
Allen was pulled inside of two minutes to play, but hope for a tying goal evaporated when Blues forward Alex Steen was called for tripping with 47 seconds to go.
Berglund struck on the power play with 7:06 left in the opening period, tapping home a Vladimir Sobotka feed from the left side.
Thornton equalized for the visitors 3:55 into the second on a shot from the slot, converting a Dan Boyle rebound from the left side of the crease.
