Pens top Bruins on Malkin's OT winner
Nov 25, 2014 - 6:23 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Evgeni Malkin scored 32 seconds into overtime to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Monday.Malkin skated to the top of the right circle and one-timed a cross-ice feed from Sidney Crosby through the pads of Tuukka Rask for his second goal of the game.
"I really like (Crosby and Malkin) together. I was hesitant early in the year. I wanted to get a little bit of balance, but I thought they had some great chemistry when they're out there 4-on-4, and they're dangerous on the rush as you saw," said Pittsburgh head coach Mike Johnston.
Crosby had the other Pittsburgh goal and finished with two assists, while Marc-Andre Fleury earned his 300th career win with a 27-save performance.
Milan Lucic and Joe Morrow scored 28 seconds apart in the second period for Boston. Rask stopped 30 shots in defeat.
Crosby opened the scoring with a spinning backhander from outside the crease 3:33 into the game. He had been held without a point in the previous two games.
Boston appeared to tie it midway through the first period, but Patrice Bergeron knocked the puck into the net with a high stick.
The Bruins were able to draw even on a passing sequence by Carl Soderberg to Loui Eriksson to Lucic at 1:43 of the second period. They grabbed the lead 28 seconds later on Morrow's first NHL goal. Morrow took a shot from the point that deflected in.
Malkin beat Rask on the blocker side with a wrist shot from the left circle during a power play, tying the game at 2-2 at 9:42 of the second.
Boston had a second goal waved off a little over a minute later. Soderberg was ruled to have directed the puck in with his glove.
"We're working hard to score goals and yet you get those taken away. We had a couple tough calls on us tonight," said Boston head coach Claude Julien.
The Bruins killed off a late penalty for too many men on the ice to force overtime.
