Bishop backs Lightning past Jackets
Feb 1, 2015 - 5:12 AM Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Bishop turned aside 34 shots to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.Cedric Paquette, Brett Connolly and Valtteri Filppula each lit the lamp for the Lightning, who have won five of their last six games.
"Another solid game out of him," Lightning forward Ryan Callahan said of Bishop. "I thought we played a really good game."
Ryan Johansen had the only marker for the Blue Jackets, who have lost three of their last four. Curtis McElhinney allowed all three goals on 34 shots in defeat.
"We had our chances," Blue Jackets defenseman Ryan Murray said. "I thought that we had a good effort. Just a few shifts in third there where we got hemmed in our own end and it cost us."
The Lightning took a 1-0 lead with just 23.5 seconds to play in the first period after Jason Garrison sent a pass from the left point to the low left side where Brenden Morrow one-touched the pass to the front and Connolly finished it off.
After a scoreless second period, Tampa took a 2-0 lead halfway through the third as Paquette was able to smack in the puck as Columbus was trying to clear it out of the crease.
Less than two minutes later, the Lightning made it a 3-0 game when Filppula rang a wrister in from the right wing off the post and in for his 10th of the season.
Johansen spoiled Bishop's shutout bid with 3:26 to play on a heavy wrister from the high slot through a screen.
