Sharks' Lerg scores winner in debut

Apr 10, 2015 - 5:34 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryan Lerg's first NHL goal was also the game-winner.

Lerg scored at 17:08 of the third period and the San Jose Sharks rallied past the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 on Thursday.

Lerg, making his NHL debut, was the beneficiary of a beautiful feed from Logan Couture, who put the moves on an Oilers defender and slipped a pass to the rookie near the right post.

"That was a really nice pass I got there," said Lerg about the goal. "It's nice to come out here and get a goal in my first game."

His one-timer beat Laurent Brossoit to make it 2-1, and Matt Nieto added an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Antti Niemi made 26 saves for the Sharks, who were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Monday.

Brossoit was peppered with shots, facing at least 14 in all three periods. He turned aside 49-of-51 despite the loss.

"I wanted to show well and show what I could do, and I think I did that at least," said Brossoit, who made his NHL debut in the game.

Nail Yakupov opened the scoring at 12:30 of the second period, beating Niemi to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead.

It held until just past the midpoint of the third, when Patrick Marleau finally solved Brossoit and tied the score. Marleau stole the puck in the Edmonton zone from Justin Schultz, deked the netminder and went upstairs with a wrister.
