Ducks try to bounce back vs. 'Canes

Feb 3, 2015 - 4:00 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Anaheim Ducks aim to avoid a third straight loss on Tuesday night as they host the Carolina Hurricanes ahead of a big road trip.

Anaheim has given up 10 goals in back-to-back losses to San Jose and Chicago, a stretch that follows a six-game winning streak. The defeats came on back-to- back nights and included a 4-1 loss to the Blackhawks on Friday.

Rickard Rakell got the Ducks on the board on a goal midway through the third period, while Patrick Maroon had an assist to give him four goals and eight points over a six-game point streak.

Frederik Andersen made 29 saves, but had his personal seven-start winning streak halted with his first loss since Dec. 31.

"You can tell how far you have to go to be the best," said Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau. "You can be in first place, but they turned it up and we weren't able to handle it."

Anaheim has not lost three in a row since an 0-1-2 slide from Nov. 15-18 and it is tied with Nashville for the most points in the NHL with 70. The Ducks open up a five-game road trip on Thursday versus the Predators.

The Ducks may have defenseman Eric Brewer in the lineup tonight. He has missed the past 23 games due to a broken foot suffered on Dec. 1, just his second game with Anaheim after being acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Brewer could slot in to replace Clayton Stoner, who missed practice on Monday due to illness.

Carolina will play three straight games out west, with stops in Anaheim, Arizona and San Jose. The Hurricanes began their four-game road trip with a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday.

Brad Malone had the only goal of the game for the 'Canes and Cam Ward allowed four goals on 37 shots in his club's second straight loss.

"I thought we did some good things, but we didn't do all the right things," said Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters. "Both their goals early were gifts from us. I didn't mind us through probably the first half of the game."

Malone also was involved in a scary incident in the second period when his shot attempt struck the exposed throat of Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

Lundqvist fell to the ice in pain, but remained in the game after being attended to.

The Ducks have won five of seven and nine of their past 14 versus the Hurricanes, including three in a row at home.

Ward is 2-1-1 with a 2.98 goals against average and .915 save percentage in five career meetings with the Ducks, while Andersen has faced the Hurricanes only once and got the win with 49 saves.
