Sharks build early lead, hold off Coyotes 4-1
Feb 14, 2016 - 8:25 AM SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Tomas Hertl had a goal taken away in the third period. It took 21 seconds to get it back.Matt Tennyson and Chris Tierney scored in the first period and the San Jose Sharks hung on to beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-1 on Saturday night.
Hertl and Joonas Donskoi also scored for the Sharks, who improved to 6-0-3 at home since a 2-8 mark in their previous 10 contests.
''There are not too many people who like to score more than Tomas,'' Sharks defender Brent Burns said. ''It was nice to get it back for him.''
Hertl's goal gave the Sharks a two-goal advantage.
''That was a big goal for us,'' Hertl said. ''It came at the right time. Burnsie gave me a great pass.''
The Sharks held the Coyotes to a single shot in third period. Martin Jones stopped 22 of 23 shots for his second straight win. He's 10-2-2 over his past 14 games. Melker Karlsson and Burns each had two assists for San Jose.
''I loved our third period,'' Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. ''To me, it's not about the goals but all the little things. We got into great positions offensively and great positions defensively, too.''
Martin Hanzal scored for the Coyotes, who lost their fifth in six games against San Jose. Louis Domingue saved 24 of 27 shots but fell to 1-4-1 in his last six games.
''We worked hard. It was some execution that led to some mistakes that ended up in the back of our net,'' Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. ''We had lots of `try.' We couldn't execute enough to get ourselves back in the game.''
Tennyson appeared in back-to-back games for the first time since early December and got the Sharks on the board 3 minutes in. He scored his second goal of the season by firing a shot that Domingue could not get down in time to stop.
''I was squared to the puck but it still found its way in,'' Domingue said. ''I don't know what to say; 99.9 percent of the time it's going to hit me.''
Logan Couture has points in his last four games and set up Tennyson with a nice pass from the side.
Tierney extended the lead by tapping in a hard pass from Burns from the top of the crease. Burns also assisted on Hertl's goal to give him successive multi-assist games.
''I think they saw Burns coming down and he's dangerous from all angles,'' Tierney said. ''All I had to do was put my stick down and make sure it was on the ice.''
Hanzal cut the Sharks lead in half early in the second period, taking a pass from Tobias Rieder and beating Jones to the glove side.
Donskoi added an empty-net goal late in the game.
''We just made a few too many mistakes and didn't create enough offensively,'' Rieder said.
