SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Joe Thornton had a goal and two assists, including the game-winning tally in overtime to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 4-3 preseason victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday.
Captain Patrick Marleau added a goal and a pair of assists for San Jose, which outshot Phoenix, 35-17, in winning its second game of the preseason.
San Jose emerged victorious at 3:03 of the extra session, when Thornton's shot from the left faceoff circle went off the crossbar and into the net.
The Coyotes drew first blood when Olli Jokinen carried the puck behind the net and backhanded it to Alex Bourret in the left circle. Bourret put a wrist shot past goaltender Evgeni Nabokov just 5:41 into the game.
After the officials called four penalties within a minute, Phoenix scored again during a 4-on-4 as Jokinen walked into the left circle and snapped a shot high over Nabokov's left shoulder for a 2-0 lead.
The Sharks halved the deficit at 2:39 of the second period, when Tomas Plihal received a pass from Jeremy Roenick from behind the goal line and stuffed the puck between netminder Al Montoya's pads. Just 95 seconds into the third, Marleau gathered the rebound of Devin Setoguchi's shot and backhanded it over Montoya to forge a 2-2 tie.
Phoenix regained the lead at 10:24 of the third as Garth Murray slid a rebound past Nabokov. But San Jose knotted it at 3-3 on a wraparound goal by Setoguchi just 73 seconds later.
