Shuttleworth saves late PK as Revs earn draw with Fire
Apr 19, 2014 - 10:29 PM Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Juan Luis Anangono failed to convert a penalty kick in stoppage time as the Chicago Fire had to settle for a sixth straight draw in a 1-1 deadlock with the New England Revolution on Saturday at Toyota Park.Quincy Amarikwa's fourth goal of the season in the 16th minute had Chicago in front, but the Revs equalized in the 31st minute through Lee Nguyen's penalty kick.
Amarikwa was sent off in the 73rd minute, but the Fire still had a chance to win the game in stoppage time when New England's Kevin Alston handled the ball on the goal line to keep out a shot from Victor Pineda.
Mike Magee had a penalty kick saved under similar circumstances against Philadelphia earlier this season, and this time it was Anangono who failed to beat goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth from the spot.
A nice through ball from Harrison Shipp released Amarikwa in behind the New England defense in the 16th minute and he was able to hold off Andrew Farrell and beat Shuttleworth with a low shot.
But the lead last just 15 minutes when Chicago's Patrick Nyarko tripped Alston inside the penalty area, allowing Nguyen to score from the spot.
The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Amarikwa received a second yellow card for time wasting and the Revs nearly grabbed a winner in the 87th with Chris Tierney arriving at the back post and having a point-blank shot saved by goalkeeper Sean Johnson.
Magee nearly won the game in stoppage time when he hit the post on the break, with Pineda's rebound effort kept out by the hand of Alston.
However, Shuttleworth got down to keep out a poor penalty kick attempt from Anangono, denying the Fire their first win of the campaign.
